Most of the people living at Chatsworth have dementia, and they are all at different stages of it. That is not a specialist wing bolted onto a general home. It is simply who lives here, and it shapes how the whole place runs.
Knowing the person
Dementia takes a lot from someone, but it does not take away who they have always been. We spend time learning what a person did for a living, what they listened to, what they cannot stand, who matters to them. That is what lets a carer settle someone at four in the morning without a fuss, and it is why we do not use agency staff. Familiar faces matter more in dementia care than almost anything else.
The home itself
Rooms are personalised so they look like they belong to the person in them, with their own furniture and pictures on the walls. When someone walks into a room full of things they recognise, they settle. Exits are coded so people can move freely around the home and the patio without anyone worrying about the front door. We also have computer equipment chosen for people with dementia, so residents can email and video call their families.
Recognition and training
Chatsworth holds the Dementia Quality Mark, and our staff train every year in dementia alongside Parkinson’s, stroke, mental capacity, deprivation of liberty and safeguarding. We also support residents living with Alzheimer’s and with physical disabilities.
